Sewing the pieces together is the part of amigurumi most people dread. These 13 free Christmas patterns skip it, or keep it to a single nose or a closing round, so you spend your time crocheting instead of pinning arms in place.

Many “no-sew” lists mix in patterns that still need sewing. We opened every pattern in October 2026 and noted what you actually have to do by hand, so you know before you start.

A quick note: we have not crocheted these patterns ourselves. They were designed and tested by the independent makers credited below. Use each original page for the full instructions.

No-sew or low-sew: what it means here

  • No-sew: every part is crocheted on as you go. At the end you only weave in ends and close the last round by cinching the yarn tail.
  • Low-sew: almost everything is crocheted on, but one small step needs a needle, like closing the head, adding a nose or stitching a face.

Safety eyes, glue and tied-on scarves do not count as sewing in this list.

How no-sew amigurumi works

No-sew patterns build the toy in one continuous piece. Instead of making an arm and sewing it on, you crochet the arm straight off the body, or you join pieces with a slip stitch or single crochet as you go.

  • Work into the body: limbs, noses and beaks start from stitches on the body, so they are attached from the first round.
  • Join with crochet: pieces are linked with slip stitches or single crochet instead of a needle.
  • Stuff as you go: you add stuffing before each opening gets small, because you cannot open it again later.
  • Close with a cinch: the last round is closed by threading the tail through the front loops and pulling it tight.

If your stuffing shows through, try a smaller hook. Our amigurumi hook size guide lists the hooks designers use for each yarn.

Tips for neat no-sew results

  1. Read the whole pattern first. No-sew designs often ask you to stuff or insert safety eyes earlier than usual.
  2. Place safety eyes before you close the head. Once the head is stuffed and closed, you cannot reach the back of the eye.
  3. Mark your rounds. A stitch marker in the first stitch of each round keeps the shaping in the right place.
  4. Keep stitches tight. Use the hook the pattern names so the stuffing does not show between stitches.
  5. For babies and toddlers, embroider the eyes instead of using safety eyes or glue, and skip small parts.

No-sew Christmas amigurumi FAQ

What does no-sew amigurumi mean?

The toy is crocheted so the parts join as you work, instead of making separate pieces and sewing them together with a needle.

Is no-sew amigurumi easier for beginners?

Often, yes, because there is no assembly. Some no-sew designs use trickier shaping, so start with an easy one like the Mini No-Sew Snowman or the No-Sew Gingerbread Man, which uses only basic stitches.

Do no-sew patterns need a yarn needle at all?

Usually just to weave in ends and sometimes to close the last round. Low-sew patterns also use it for one small detail, like a nose.

What is the difference between no-sew and low-sew?

No-sew means nothing is sewn on. Low-sew means almost everything is crocheted together, but one or two small parts are stitched by hand.

What yarn works best for no-sew amigurumi?

Worsted acrylic or cotton for crisp shapes, or super bulky and chenille yarn for soft, fast plushies like the Pocket Polar Bear.

Are no-sew amigurumi strong enough for kids?

Crocheted-on parts are very secure. For children under 3, embroider the eyes and avoid glued or small parts.

How long does a no-sew Christmas amigurumi take?

Small no-sew ornaments often take 30 minutes to 2 hours. Larger characters can take an evening or more. Each pattern card shows the time, marked “approx.” when it’s our estimate.

Can I use safety eyes on no-sew amigurumi?

Yes. Insert safety eyes before you close the head, because the backs can’t be added later. For babies and small children, embroider the eyes instead.
