20 Free Crochet Snowman Patterns (Easy, No-Sew & Giant)

·

Original illustration of three crochet snowman styles: a large winter figure, small standing snowman and hanging bauble.

Finding free crochet snowman patterns is easy. Finding ones that still work, say how big the snowman is and tell you how much sewing it needs? Much harder. So we opened 20 free snowman patterns one by one on the designers’ own pages and sorted them the way you’d actually choose: easy, no-sew, ornament, big or giftable. Each one has a pattern card with the size, hook, yarn and sewing, so you know what you’re getting before you click.

Images are original AI-created editorial illustrations. Follow designer links to see the actual pattern designs.

Quick answer: For a first snowman, make Sweet Softies’ Chibi Christmas Snowman (about 30 minutes, chunky yarn). If you hate sewing, pick The Loopy Lamb’s Mini No-Sew Snowman. For the tree, choose Hooked On Patterns’ Snowman Baubles. For a big statement piece, go with The Loopy Lamb’s Jumbo Snowman (8.75 in, no sewing) or Spin a Yarn’s Cozy Snowman (12.5 in).

Looking for something specific? Try our Pattern Finder to filter every pattern by skill level, time, sewing and hook size.

A quick note: we curate, we don’t copy. Every pattern belongs to its designer, so the full instructions are on their page. Times marked “approx.” are our estimates. Times marked “per designer” come from the pattern itself.

New to amigurumi? 5 words you’ll see below

  • Amigurumi: small stuffed toys made with crochet (a Japanese word).
  • Magic ring: an adjustable loop you start most round pieces with, so the center closes tight with no hole.
  • Invisible decrease: a neat way to join two stitches into one, so the shaping doesn’t leave gaps.
  • Safety eyes: plastic eyes with a washer that locks on the inside. They’re not safe for babies under 3.
  • Worsted / super bulky: yarn thickness. Worsted (#4) is medium; super bulky (#6) is very thick and works up fast.

Easy crochet snowman patterns for beginners

Plenty of “easy” snowman patterns turn out to hide a tiny hook, a few color changes and a long page of assembly. That’s usually where beginners give up, holding a lumpy white ball with no idea where the arms go.

What actually makes a snowman easy is thick yarn you can see, only a few separate pieces, and ideally a video. Size matters less than you’d think: a tiny sport-cotton snowman is often harder than a big chunky one.

So start with a chunky or worsted design that has a video, and save the small cotton ornaments for when the magic ring and invisible decrease feel natural. If pattern abbreviations still look like code, read how to read crochet patterns first.

Here’s the difference in practice. With one ball of chunky yarn, a first-timer can finish the Chibi Snowman (#1) in an evening; start with the 2 mm Mini Snowman (#5) instead, and most of that evening goes on counting stitches.

No-sew crochet snowman patterns

Sewing is the step most people dread. You pin the arms, line up the nose, and an hour later the head still sits a little crooked.

And “no-sew” on a pattern page doesn’t always mean you’ll never pick up a needle. Some still ask you to close the body or stitch on a scarf, which is why we read each pattern and marked the real amount of sewing on every card.

If you want zero needlework, pick a true 0/3 design below. Can you handle one small nose? Then Flurry (#14), at 1/3, is worth a look too. There are more ideas in our 13 no-sew Christmas amigurumi patterns.

One nice trick: The Loopy Lamb’s mini (#6) and jumbo (#8) use the same no-sew method in two sizes, so you can make a big-and-small pair without sewing a single piece.

6. Mini No-Sew Snowman by The Loopy Lamb

A 4-inch snowman where the nose and arms are crocheted in as you go. You finish by cinching the last round closed. There’s a video tutorial, too.

Crochet snowman ornaments for the tree

A big plush snowman looks lovely on a shelf, but on the tree it just drags the branch down. Most ornament patterns don’t mention the finished size either, so you only find out after making six.

Good tree ornaments are light, about 2–6 inches tall, and made in cotton or acrylic that keeps its shape. Flat ones are quicker than 3D snowmen, and they slip into a card for mailing.

Choose by shape: round baubles (#9), flat photo frames (#10, #11), or a classic standing snowman (#12, #13). Want more for the tree? Browse our free crochet Christmas ornament patterns.

For grandparents, the photo-frame snowman (#10) with a grandchild’s picture inside is hard to beat. It’s personal, light enough for any branch, and fits in a greeting-card envelope.

9. Snowman Baubles by Hooked On Patterns

Large and giant crochet snowman patterns

Maybe you want one big snowman that everyone notices by the front door. The catch is that big patterns can swallow a whole weekend and three skeins of yarn.

Thick yarn is the shortcut. In super bulky or faux fur, a snowman reaches 9–12 inches in a few hours, while the same height in worsted can take all weekend.

For speed, go with the Jumbo Snowman (#8, above). For a weekend centerpiece, choose Flurry (#14) or the Cozy Snowman (#15), and for a whole family in different sizes, try Yarn + Chai’s 2- and 3-layer snowmen (#16).

One styling idea for the door: put Flurry (9.5 in) next to two Yarn + Chai snowmen (4.75 and 8 in). Three patterns, three heights, and you have a little snow family.

Snowman home decor and gifts

Not everyone on your list wants another toy. Some people would rather have a snowman they can use, on the sofa, around a mug, or in a baby’s crib.

That’s where pillows, mug cozies and loveys shine. They make better gifts for adults and new parents than a shelf figure, and they’re often quicker to make.

Match the make to the person: the melted snowman for someone with a sense of humor, the pillow for a cozy home, the mug hug for a coffee lover, and the lovey for a baby.

Need something for the office? Slip Red Heart’s Snowman Mug Hug (#19) onto a plain mug and fill it with cocoa sachets; it looks like a lot of effort for very little cost. For more ideas, see our crochet Christmas gifts and quick crochet gifts for coworkers.

Easy on the hands: snowmen with big hooks

After an hour with a 2 mm hook and thin cotton, a lot of us feel it in our hands and wrists, especially in December, when we’re crocheting every evening.

Bigger hook, thicker yarn, fewer stitches: that’s the whole idea. You grip less, count less, and the snowman grows faster.

These patterns all use a 5 mm hook or bigger:

PatternHookWhy it’s easier
#1 Chibi Christmas Snowman5 mmSuper bulky yarn, about 30 min (per designer)
#4 DIY Fluffies Snowman (chenille version)5 mmSoft yarn, full video
#8 Jumbo Snowman8 mmBlanket yarn, no sewing
#9 Snowman Baubles (chunky version)6 mmSmall and quick
#10 Snowman Ornament with Photo5 mmFlat pieces, little yarn
#18 Snowman Pillow5 mmFlat rows, no stuffing
#20 Snowman Lovey5.5–6 mmChunky, soft yarn

If small hooks bother you, try the Chibi (#1) instead of the 2 mm Mini Snowman (#5). You get a similar little snowman with a hook more than twice as thick. A soft, ergonomic handle and a short break every 20–30 minutes help, too.

Gift timeline: which snowman to make by when

We’ve all been there: a big project started too late, and a gift still missing its arms on Christmas Eve.

It’s the size and the amount of sewing that decide how long a snowman takes, not how cute it is. So plan the big ones first and keep the 30-minute snowmen for the final week.

Here’s a simple plan if you’re working toward December 25:

Time left before ChristmasMake theseApprox. time each
3+ weeks (by Dec 4)#15 Cozy Snowman, #18 Snowman Pillow, #14 FlurryA weekend
2 weeks (by Dec 11)#16 Yarn + Chai Snowmen, #17 Melted Snowman, #20 Snowman Lovey, #2 Tiny Baby Snowman2–4 hrs
1 week (by Dec 18)#5 Mini Snowman Ornament, #10 Photo Ornament, #11 Snowman Decoration, #12 Snowman Ornament, #13 Baby Snowman1–3 hrs
Last weekend#6 Mini No-Sew, #8 Jumbo, #19 Mug Hug, #7 No-Sew Ornament1–3 hrs
The night before#1 Chibi Snowman, #9 Snowman BaublesAbout 30 min

Sending gifts to family abroad? Aim for the “3+ weeks” row, because international post can take two weeks or more in December.

Original illustration of smooth yarn, chenille yarn, hooks, stuffing and stitch markers for planning crochet snowmen.

Shopping list: what you need for most snowmen

Check each pattern’s own materials list, but most snowmen on this list use:

  • White yarn in worsted (#4) or super bulky (#6). Super bulky is fastest.
  • Small amounts of orange, black and a scarf color (scrap yarn is perfect).
  • A crochet hook in the size the pattern names (2–8 mm here).
  • Polyester fiberfill for stuffing.
  • Safety eyes (6–16 mm), or black embroidery floss for baby-safe faces.
  • Stitch markers to mark the start of each round.
  • A yarn needle for weaving in ends and closing the last round.

Tip: One skein of white super bulky yarn usually makes several small chunky snowmen, so a single purchase can cover a whole batch of gifts. Check the yardage on your pattern.

Not sure which hook fits your yarn? See our amigurumi hook size guide, based on 62 free patterns.

Tips for a neat crochet snowman

  1. Use the hook the pattern names. Amigurumi uses a smaller hook than the yarn label suggests, so the stuffing doesn’t show.
  2. Place safety eyes before you close the head. You can’t reach the back of the eye once it’s stuffed.
  3. Stuff firmly, especially the bottom ball. A firm base helps the snowman stand. Yarn + Chai adds a small sealed bag of rice.
  4. Mark your rounds. A stitch marker in the first stitch keeps the shaping even.
  5. For babies and toddlers, embroider the eyes and nose, and skip buttons, beads and glue.

European crafters: what to know before you start

Many free patterns are written with US crocheters in mind, which can trip up makers in the UK and Europe on yarn names and stitch terms.

Three designers on this list are based in Europe: DIY Fluffies in the Netherlands, and Hooked On Patterns and Simply Yarn in the UK. Their patterns use European yarns, but the stitch terms can still differ.

Four things to check before you start:

  • Stitch terms: A US single crochet (sc) is a UK double crochet (dc). Check which terms the pattern uses before you start. The Simply Yarn decoration (#11) uses UK terms.
  • Yarn names: US worsted (#4) is close to UK/EU Aran. US light worsted or DK (#3) is DK. US sport (#2) is close to UK 4-ply.
  • Hooks: Every pattern here lists metric sizes (mm), so you don’t need US letter sizes.
  • Selling at Christmas markets: If you plan to sell finished snowmen in the EU or UK, two things apply. First, check each designer’s selling policy on their page. Second, a soft toy sold in the EU or UK must follow toy safety rules, including CE or UKCA marking. Ornaments with safety eyes, buttons or glued parts are best sold as decorations, not toys.

For example, a maker in Germany with Aran-weight wool can follow Flurry (#14, worsted) with the same 3.5 mm hook and get close to its 9.5-inch height.

Free crochet snowman patterns FAQ

Is there a free PDF pattern for crocheting a snowman?

Yes. Jess Huff’s Flurry (#14) comes with a free PDF, and Red Heart’s Snowman Mug Hug (#19) is a free PDF download with no sign-up. Most others are free to read on the designer’s blog, with an optional paid ad-free PDF.

What is the easiest crochet snowman for beginners?

The Chibi Christmas Snowman by Sweet Softies. It uses super bulky yarn, one main piece and a 5 mm hook, and the designer says it takes about 30 minutes.

Can I make a snowman without sewing?

Yes. The Loopy Lamb’s Mini No-Sew (#6) and Jumbo (#8) snowmen and StringyDingDing’s No-Sew Ornament (#7) need no sewing at all. Flurry (#14) only needs the nose sewn on.

How long does it take to crochet a snowman?

A small chunky snowman can take 30 minutes to an hour. A 3–4 inch cotton ornament takes a few hours. A 9–12 inch snowman like Flurry or the Cozy Snowman can take most of a weekend.

What yarn is best for a crochet snowman?

Worsted or sport cotton gives crisp ornaments. Super bulky chenille or faux fur gives soft, fast plushies. For tree ornaments, cotton holds its shape best.

How do I make a large crochet snowman?

Use thicker yarn instead of more rounds. The Loopy Lamb’s Jumbo uses blanket yarn and an 8 mm hook to reach 8.75 inches, and DIY Fluffies’ pattern grows from 4 to 9 inches with chenille yarn.

Can I sell snowmen made from these free patterns?

It depends on each designer. Some allow small-scale sales with credit, and others ask for personal use only. Check the terms on each pattern page.

How do you make a crochet snowman stand up?

Give it a flat base. Many patterns end the bottom ball with a few rounds worked without increases, which makes a flat circle to sit on. Stuff the bottom ball firmly, and for tall snowmen add a small sealed bag of plastic pellets or a flat cardboard circle inside the base before closing.

What size safety eyes for a crochet snowman?

It depends on the yarn. As a rough guide, small snowmen in sport or DK yarn often use 6–8 mm eyes, worsted snowmen 9–12 mm, and chunky or giant snowmen 12–15 mm or more. Check the size your pattern lists, and for babies and small children, embroider the eyes instead.
